Built on DORA, by design The h-index and journal quartiles are exactly what DORA argues against — pure citation counts, blind to field (so teaching scholars always look "low" next to lab scientists) and blind to everything teaching scholarship actually produces. The SoTL Index answers that: it field-normalises, it values openness and teaching focus over journal prestige, and it shows every component so it can never become a single hidden number. It measures a body of scholarly work — not a person's worth, and not their teaching itself, which no bibliographic tool can see.

The five dimensions reset weights

How the SoTL Index is built — and what it is not Public outputs are read from OpenAlex (open bibliographic data) via the ORCID or institution. Five dimensions, each scored 0–100, then mapped to a 1–7 developmental spectrum (you can re-weight every dimension live) — a spectrum, not a precise score, because reducing a scholar to a fine-grained rank is exactly what DORA cautions against: Reach — citations per output, normalised to the author's primary field so teaching/education scholars are judged fairly, not against lab sciences. Openness — share of outputs that are open access. SoTL focus — share of outputs that are genuinely teaching-&-learning scholarship (recognised SoTL/higher-education journals + education-tagged work). Collaboration — breadth of the co-authorship network. Sustained contribution — consistency of scholarly output over time. Grounded in Boyer's scholarship of teaching, Glassick's standards and DORA. It is an open, in-development instrument for reflection — not SCImago, Scopus or Clarivate; not a measure of a person's worth or their teaching; and explicitly not a tool for ranking individuals against each other. Calibration constants are deliberately transparent and will be refined with the sector. NTLSN is independent of OpenAlex and all metric providers. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is stored.
